Band hits a festive note

THIS set of pictures from Bert Whalley takes us back to the Christmas of 1980.

Mr Whalley is now based near Bradford but lived in Ulverston for many years and was a familiar sight around the town with his camera.

Our main picture shows Bill Craig conducting Ulverston Junior Band.

The girl playing cornet on the far right end of the front row is Sarah Harrison, with Susan Teper second in, then Becky Todd (just visible).

On the extreme left is Graham Smith on trombone and Malcolm Kidd on euphonium.

Shopping was a rather different experience 31 years ago as most shops and supermarkets in Furness were to close from Christmas Eve until December 29 – four days without a chance to spend!

Britain was still in a recession and it was announced that up to 1,000 kitchen staff in Cumbria’s schools faced redundancy.

Geoff Mansell, of Abbey Road Cons Club, had reason to celebrate as new Evening Mail snooker champion.

Work had started on converting the Harriet, a 60ft fishing boat at Millom, into a holiday home for youngsters.
