Millom Mackwai Judo Club

MILLOM is preparing to lay out the welcome mat for 150 young martial experts from all over the North of England on Sunday.

The town's Mackwai Judo Club plays host to the South Cumbria Championships from 10am.

Competitors aged eight to 19, from Merseyside to Northumbria and all points in between, are taking part in the annual event.

The North West Evening Mail Charitable Trust made a £200 donation to help fund this year's event.

The Millom club has 25-30 members and is in its 50th year.

It has been at its Devonshire Road Industrial site base for the last six years and has a purpose-built competion area.

Roger Bradley, chairman and coach, said: "Most clubs have to compete in church or village halls, but this is excellent.

"It's a great club for the youngsters to have. Not only for the health benefits of judo but also in teaching them discipline. We get parents coming down here saying their kid was shy but since coming to judo they have really come out of their shell."

Fellow club coach Tommy Dixon also takes the judo message around the local schools. His own sons Adam, 14, and Ben, 11, have been selected to go to judo camp in Sweden next month and to Holland in June.
