Millom nuclear power station - MP's view

MILLOM’S MP is backing plans for a nuclear power station near the town.
If the government approves the project, the plant would be built at Layriggs Farm in Kirksanton and create 600 permanent jobs.
MP Jamie Reed, whose Copeland constituency includes Millom, says it would be the most “the most significant development in the history of the area” and should be given the go ahead.
Mr Reed told the Evening Mail: “I have been working to bring projects like this to Copeland for the last three years. If it does go ahead, it will return Millom to a level of employment not seen since the 1960s, if not more.
“If it comes off, the knock-on effect for the economy would really regenerate the area.
“We are coming to the beginning of a new era and the benefits are going to be felt mostly in Copeland.
“It is an incredibly exciting time.
“The plant would be the most significant development in the history of the area.”
The company behind the plans, RWE npower, has secured options to buy farmland at the Layriggs site for an undisclosed sum.
The 3.6GW power plant would be the first nuclear construction since Sizewell B was completed in Suffolk 14 years ago. It could be capable of powering five million homes per year.
Test drilling at Layriggs Farm has taken place to measure the land’s suitability.
RWE nwpower say a full public consultation will take place before the plans are put into action. A series of public events are to be held about the scheme. But it has not yet been revealed when those events will take place.
The community is divided on the plant’s location.

Racist to the extreme. Scottish overlords hahaha. I wish. More like American overlords. So much for being part of the Union huh. We get the first little bit of power we've ever had in 400 years and you go nuts. And if I recall the reason Cumbria is at the forefront for a proposed build is because a) we need the investment and infrastructure upgrades unlike the South and b)we allready have the skills, the people and the sites to deal with a new nuclear plant. You would think the influx of money into the region would be a good thing and if the waste is handled responsibly (as it is) there shoudln't be a problem). Scottish overlords...please. You'd think you were ruled by us the way you go on when in reality the shoe has been and probably always will be on the other foot.

Have your say
The "carrot" of jobs is a mouldy old thing because 500 people employed by the prison will loose their jobs so that 600 people from further afield can work at Kirksanton. Anyone who has tangled with the Sellafield traffic on Corney Fell and other local roads knows, that a lot of people people working in the nuclear industry do not live in the "local" community.
There are countless people employed directly and indirectly in tourism that will lose their jobs because who wants to visit the "glowing" coast? The beautiful stretch of coastline between Millom and Braystones will be permanently blighted by development of all 3 sites. Nuclear new build is probably necessary, so why not build it all at Sellafield - the government and its agencies own plenty of land around there. The National Park and Cumbria County Council support further development there.Posted by Dave Huhes on 11 March 2010 at 20:35
