Co-op in Lapstone Road was closed on January 2 for a £300,000 revamp.

Specialists were called in to the 100-year-old building last month to remove potentially deadly asbestos.

But work has now been completed, the shelves stocked and the doors reopened on Thursday.

The ceremony was marked with balloons and a ribbon cutting by youngsters from Millom Infants’ School.

Store manager Rob Heath said: “As a community retailer it is appropriate we involve the community in our special events and we are delighted our local school could play a central role in the relaunch of our store.”

The Co-op also donated £200 to the school’s funds to mark the occasion.
