Skate park plans set to be unveiled

A SERIES of Dragons’ Den style pitches will help select the final design for a potential town centre skate park.
Funding was secured last year to create a skate park in Millom Park in St George’s Road.
Now Councillor Brian Crawford, a member of the Friends of Millom Park which secured the funding, is holding a series of workshops with prospective developers to help select the final design.
The first session takes place on Thursday but the designs themselves remain a closely guarded secret.
Cllr Crawford said: “The meeting will show off the final designs from Maverick (Industries) who will be showing what they think we should have. They have said they’re keeping the designs under wraps until the meeting though. There are designs from two other companies – this is the first of a series of three presentations.”
Dozens of eager skaters have turned out for previous meetings with the three designers and Maverick Industries will present its final designs next week.
The group will have the final say on which design is picked.
Cllr Crawford has urged youngsters to attend the meeting.
He was keen to submit a final planning application by the end of the month. Cllr Crawford said: “I want as many people as possible to come to the workshops because it’s going to be there for a long time. It will have a massive impact if it comes off. Some of the kids who will use it haven’t even been born yet. Once the group has finalised their decision on the design, I’m hoping to have an open afternoon when people can come and look at the plans. People have been coming to the meetings from as far as Windermere, Barrow and Bootle.”
The first meeting takes place in Millom Network Centre in Salthouse Road, Millom, from 7pm. For more information contact Cllr Crawford at brian@crawford-cumbria.fsworld.co.uk.
