THE trial of a man accused of murdering a mum-of-three and trying to murder his stepfather was due to begin today.

By Amy Fenton

Benjamin Alan Cooper is charged with murdering 35-year-old Claire Marshall, who was found with fatal stab wounds at her home in Newton Street, Millom, on January 24 last year.

Cooper is also accused of attempting to murder his 64-year-old stepfather, Gerald Fern, and possessing an offensive weapon – a knife – in Mainsgate Road, Millom, on the same day.

Cooper, 35, of Wellington Street, Millom, pleaded not guilty to the three allegations at Preston Crown Court in September.

His trial was due to begin today at Manchester Crown Court.
