AN elderly woman was airlifted to hospital following a road crash.
Emergency services were called to the collision at The Hill, near Millom, at 8.30am yesterday.
The crash involved a blue Vauxhall Vectra and a blue Peugeot 406.
Police say the passenger of the Vauxhall, a 71-year-old woman from Millom, had to be cut free from the car by firefighters.
She was then airlifted to Furness General Hospital by the North West Air Ambulance Service, suffering from suspected chest and back injuries.
The helicopter made two separate flights as the driver of the Peugeot, a 31-year-old man from Ulverston, was also airlifted to FGH with suspected chest injuries.
The 65-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall was also taken to FGH by ambulance.
Mark Roach, Barrow fire watch manager, was called to the scene of the crash and confirmed one crew from Broughton and one crew from Millom attended the scene.
He said: “There was a two vehicle road collision and a passenger in one of the vehicles was kept in the vehicle because she was complaining of back pain.
“We didn’t want to move her until paramedics were satisfied that she was stable and comfortable. We took the roof off the vehicle to create more space for ourselves.
“Once we had created more space we placed the woman on a spine board, lifted her out of the car and put her in the air ambulance before she was taken to Furness General Hospital.
“Both the woman passenger and the driver of the other vehicle were taken to Furness General Hospital for precautionary measures.”
Paul West, clinical manager for the North West Air Ambulance, said: “The helicopter was able to land close to the incident and provide rapid and smooth transit to hospital.”
All three people were later discharged from FGH.
The woman is recovering at home, with a suspected broken arm.
Police closed a section of the A5093 and diversions were put in place while emergency services dealt with the situation.
The road was reopened at 1.34pm.
l A 31 year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
He has been street bailed until March 19 when he is due to attend Workington police station.
